Get the whānau together and come over for a day of fun activities! Weave a kite (manu aute), enjoy waiata with Tenaya Brown and the sounds of taoka puoro (traditional Māori instruments) with Dr Jennifer Cattermole, experience the Waka Whetū Matariki visual showcase by Otago Polytechnic, make your own poi at our makerspace, and have a go at mau rākau (Māori traditional martial arts) in a workshop led by Jade Morgan. All that and more will be on offer during Matariki at Tūhura Otago Museum. Most activities are free and some require a booking.

It's time to boogie again with Matariki madness coming to Ōtaki. The Hori Gallery are excited to host the Matariki on Moana Street Party for the second year in a row. Join the fun on Friday, 28 June, 10am–4pm for an unforgettable celebration. With an amazing lineup featuring Troy Kingi and Anika Moa, along with delicious kai, kawhe, and kōrero at Te Chur. Enjoy a variety of food trucks, art, markets, kapa haka, and music from DJ Aotearoa Records, with Te Kuru Dewes on the mic. This is a fun-filled event for the whole whānau to celebrate the Māori New Year in style.

Encounter the night sky from inside Te Rauparaha Arena, with interactive experiences. Runs from Friday 28 June – Sunday 30 June, 10am-8pm. Then Saturday 6 July - Sunday 7 July, 10am-3pm. Sessions will run from 10am – 8pm. Each session is 30 minutes long, and will run every 45 minutes between 10am – 8pm.

The harbourside area will have a never-seen-before outdoor light display for the whole family to walk through and experience. There’ll be fireside stories and buskers – and you can purchase food from the newly opened Kai Tahi.

Join us for a special market this Friday 28 June for Matariki - brought to you by the team who runs the regular Whakatāne Sunday Market. The market will showcase a variety of stalls from throughout the region & the wider Bay of Plenty. Includes stalls by local rangitahi / youth, which will be aligned to one of the kaupapa of one of the matariki stars.

The festival is in it’s second year and features workshops, a hāngī and concert & a Matariki viewing. The Workshop topics include whakairo, raranga, collaborative artwork, tā mako, kite making, clay and textiles art. The workshops are all practical and you will be able to make something that you can take away with you to remember Matariki or gift to a loved one. The highlight of the weekend for many is the hāngī at Williamson Park. e cater for over 600 people with hāngī, kai moana and vegan curry served along with entertainment from local bands and Kapa Haka.

Bring your lanterns (battery / LED only, no flames allowed) and light up costumes that embody themes of renewal, togetherness, and the guiding light during the darkest time of the year. Think twinkling stars, glowing moons, and vibrant lanterns that chase away the winter shadows! Gather at 4:30pm at Bascule Park where kids can decorate & create their own lantern if they don't have one. The 5:30pm procession will go to Pūtahi Park where a mesmerising world of light awaits! Explore stunning light art installations, indulge in delicious food and drinks from local vendors, & browse unique gifts.

Join us as we light up the Village to celebrate the beginning of Matariki! In the War Memorial Hall from 4:00pm to 7:00pm there will be plenty of stalls including local growers, arts, crafts, and a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Hikurangi School playground. There will also be performances from the Hikurangi School Kapa Haka Roopu & Pacific Island Roopu. Then at 5:30pm local stores & houses will turn on their lights to light up the Village for the duration of Matariki. Prizes will be announced for houses with the most festive Matariki lighting.

Celebrating the Māori New Year in Shannon! There will be live music, entertainment, games, food and market stalls.

Festival of Light - Fireworks Extravaganza is on June 28th, starting at 4pm at Kumara Racecourse. $30 per car (max 5 ppl). $10 per adult and $5 per child (under 12) walk-in, drop off, or more than 5 in a vehicle. The Hokitika Lions Club is bringing Greymouth and Hokitika together for this year’s Westland Puanga-Matariki event. The dazzling celebration will also feature live entertainment, food vendors and market stalls, giving families the chance to dine under the stars. The extravaganza runs from 4 to 8pm, with the fireworks at 7pm.

Taikura Kapa Haka brings together over 700 kaumātua from regional and marae-based rōpū throughout the motu to Te Whanganui-a-Tara during Matariki. The weekend is a celebration of traditional performing arts and rich mātauranga which our koroua and kuia share during their 15-minute kapa haka performances. Nau mai! Haere mai! Tautoko mai! You're warmly invited to join us in celebrating Matariki with Kaicycle, Seeds to Feeds, and the Travelling Kitchen on Saturday 29th June. This event will take place at Kaicycle Urban Farm, 5 Hospital Road, Newtown, with a wet-weather venue available if needed. Join us from 10am to harvest from the māra and prepare kai for our community lunch. Learn how to make delicious rice paper rolls and help us prepare soup with vegetables from the māra. Join us at 1pm for our community lunch. Kai will be provided but please bring some to share if you have the capacity.

The Matariki Drone Light Show will take place at the University Oval at Logan Park on Saturday 29 June. The community is invited to bring picnics or browse the night market food trucks from 5.30pm, with the ten-minute long show starting at 6.30pm. The food trucks will be on Logan Park Drive by the path that runs along the side of the artificial turfs with the stage nearby. The Drone Light Show will be over the University Oval with an exclusion zone for safety stretching from the Sargood Centre to Logan Park Drive to just beyond the Otago University RFC.

This June 29th, Matariki in the Zone is back! We will mark Matariki and aspects of Maori Tradition with food, music, activities and a week-long trail lighting display. We'll have activities for kids big and small - wood-carving, flax-weaving, marshmallow-toasting and more! The delicious hāngi will be raised at 4.30pm, with huge thanks to Tuahiwi Marae.

Matariki Mahuika Lights up Aotearoa Kahungunu shares the warmth of their fire Free nationwide community event. Gather all people together for Matariki Beach fires to celebrate all New Zealanders' connection to place and each other. A revival of traditional storytelling around the fire. The lighting of beach fires to mark Matariki is a tradition launched in Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay in 2023 and now spreading across Aotearoa. Matariki Mahuika will always be the Saturday of the long Matariki weekend - June 29 in 2024.

Matariki whānau hui 2024 is a whānau based, community driven fun event run by members of DCBC for the general public. We will share in honouring our past, celebrating the present and looking to the future together as a whānau. We will open with whakatau, have guest speakers including local Māori tane me wahine, kapa haka performances from local schools, kids craft and face painting, Otago museum will share their starlab experience and of course we will share a hakari.

6am on the 29th of June our hapū & Whānau will be reflecting, celebrating and sharing in our first Marae Hautapu. Followed by a shared breakfast. 1pm we have invited all Kaumātua of Tamatea to join us for a entertaining Matariki Stars Lunch. To celebrate, to thank, to them for all that they are.
