Get the whānau together and come over for a day of fun activities! Weave a kite (manu aute), enjoy waiata with Tenaya Brown and the sounds of taoka puoro (traditional Māori instruments) with Dr Jennifer Cattermole, experience the Waka Whetū Matariki visual showcase by Otago Polytechnic, make your own poi at our makerspace, and have a go at mau rākau (Māori traditional martial arts) in a workshop led by Jade Morgan. All that and more will be on offer during Matariki at Tūhura Otago Museum. Most activities are free and some require a booking.

Join the fun on Friday, 28 June, 10am–4pm for an unforgettable celebration. With an amazing lineup featuring Troy Kingi and Anika Moa, along with delicious kai, kawhe, and kōrero at Te Chur. The festival is in it’s second year and features workshops, a hāngī and concert & a Matariki viewing. The Workshop topics include whakairo, raranga, collaborative artwork, tā mako, kite making, clay and textiles art. The workshops are all practical and you will be able to make something that you can take away with you to remember Matariki or gift to a loved one. The highlight of the weekend for many is the hāngī at Williamson Park. e cater for over 600 people with hāngī, kai moana and vegan curry served along with entertainment from local bands and Kapa Haka.

Join us as we light up the Village to celebrate the beginning of Matariki! In the War Memorial Hall from 4:00pm to 7:00pm there will be plenty of stalls including local growers, arts, crafts, and a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Hikurangi School playground. There will also be performances from the Hikurangi School Kapa Haka Roopu & Pacific Island Roopu. Then at 5:30pm local stores & houses will turn on their lights to light up the Village for the duration of Matariki. Prizes will be announced for houses with the most festive Matariki lighting.

Festival of Light - Fireworks Extravaganza is on June 28th, starting at 4pm at Kumara Racecourse. $30 per car (max 5 ppl). $10 per adult and $5 per child (under 12) walk-in, drop off, or more than 5 in a vehicle. The Hokitika Lions Club is bringing Greymouth and Hokitika together for this year’s Westland Puanga-Matariki event. The dazzling celebration will also feature live entertainment, food vendors and market stalls, giving families the chance to dine under the stars. The extravaganza runs from 4 to 8pm, with the fireworks at 7pm.

This event will take place at Kaicycle Urban Farm, 5 Hospital Road, Newtown, with a wet-weather venue available if needed. Join us from 10am to harvest from the māra and prepare kai for our community lunch. Learn how to make delicious rice paper rolls and help us prepare soup with vegetables from the māra. The Matariki Drone Light Show will take place at the University Oval at Logan Park on Saturday 29 June. The community is invited to bring picnics or browse the night market food trucks from 5.30pm, with the ten-minute long show starting at 6.30pm. The food trucks will be on Logan Park Drive by the path that runs along the side of the artificial turfs with the stage nearby. The Drone Light Show will be over the University Oval with an exclusion zone for safety stretching from the Sargood Centre to Logan Park Drive to just beyond the Otago University RFC.

Matariki Mahuika Lights up Aotearoa Kahungunu shares the warmth of their fire Free nationwide community event. Gather all people together for Matariki Beach fires to celebrate all New Zealanders' connection to place and each other. A revival of traditional storytelling around the fire. The lighting of beach fires to mark Matariki is a tradition launched in Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay in 2023 and now spreading across Aotearoa. Matariki Mahuika will always be the Saturday of the long Matariki weekend - June 29 in 2024.
