Celebrate Matariki with friends and whānau at Matariki Ahunga Nui, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Write your dreams and aspirations to place on the Hiwa-i-te-rangi tree, participate in poi making, join in Waiata Manahau, a waiata singalong with Jordyn Rapana, and enjoy kapa haka, kai and performances. This event is free entry and activation spaces are wheelchair accessible.

In celebration of Matariki 2024, Lake House Arts presents live performances, local art, tasty food and craft stalls. Enjoy an evening filled with community spirit and cultural festivities under the stars.

Matariki Arrowtown Kā-Muriwai returns on Friday 28 June 2024. The theme of "Bringing Whānau Together" will be weaved through performances and experiences. This year's event extends further along Buckingham Street with Māori educational experiences in Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall and Lakes District Museum and two stages for entertainment. Buckingham Green will once again feature kapa haka performances by tamariki from the local preschool.

Matariki Festival Day brings people of all ages together to celebrate Matariki at the Auckland Botanic Gardens. This fantastic full-day event features top Aotearoa New Zealand artists, guest speakers, performance, music, craft stalls, educational stalls and kai stalls, offering a range of activities and experiences for whānau and attendees across the beautiful, landscaped expanse of the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

Join a one-day symposium on whakapapa and genealogy that includes toi / arts-practitioner participation. This special event is dedicated to sharing resources for whakapapa research as well as information about genealogy and Matariki for community researchers, artists, whānau and genealogists. The presenters are experts in their disciplines concerning history of the cosmos, whakapapa-influenced artworks and taonga, Matariki-specific kōrero, and personal experience working with and within whakapapa.

A unique New Zealand celebration, this kaupapa draws together the many communities of Eastern Southland and wider districts to give our tamariki and rangatahi a chance to perform their kapa haka routines in front of family and friends. The day culminates with the rather spectacular light show.

From 5.00am – 7.00am our Matariki Hautapu Ceremony, will showcase a deep respect for ancestral practices that acknowledge the past, present, and future through 3 key parts of the dawn ceremony. Part 1: Te Tirohanga, looks to the stars for forecasts. Based on these observations, tohunga make predictions about the upcoming year. Part 2: Taki Mōteatea, remembers loved ones who have passed away since the last appearance of Matariki. Part 3: Te Whāngai i ngā whetū, means 'feeding the stars'. Kai representing each of the 4 different stars associated with food is gathered and cooked in hāngī.

New for 2024: Te Puia’s Whānau Fun Day on Rotowhio Marae atea will include: - Scenic train rides through Te Whakarewarewa Valley to see Pōhutu Geyser in action. - Delicious kai available in Pātaka Kai and Hiakai Cafe, as well as market food stalls available with food relating to ngā whetū (stars of Matariki). - Pā activities such as Tītī tōrea, rhythmic poi and haka lessons plus hula hoop competitions. - Matariki wānanga (seminars). - See pōhiri and cultural performances. - Matariki tāonga market with contemporary Māori artists. - Kiri tuhi or moko face painting. - Bouncy castles and much more.

Join us for a lecture on the history and astronomy of Matariki at 7:30pm on Friday the 28th of June. The lecture will be delivered by Richard Croy, President of the Hamilton Astronomical Society.

Join the Matariki Dawn Service in Katikati where you’ll be treated to commentary on how to view and identify the Matariki cluster. You’ll learn what these stars mean individually, culturally, and how their values can be embodied, practiced and celebrated by our diverse community. Guests will be treated to kapa haka, intentional goal setting for the year ahead, as well as refreshments to celebrate new beginnings for the Māori New Year. Tākina mai rā ko ngā hui o Matariki. Our invitation extends to the entire community to gather for a meaningful Maumaharatanga ceremony on Mauao. Together, we will honour and remember our departed loved ones by calling out their names. This poignant event is a tribute to their spirits rising alongside the Matariki cluster, welcomed by Te Waka o Rangi into the celestial realms. We commemorate their journey with the cherished saying ‘kua whakawhetūrangihia rātou’ (where they transform into stars for us to revere).

Ka kitea a Matariki, Ka rere te Piharau. The kaupapa celebrates the rising of Matariki and the many associated works in and around our district of Maungatautari. It remembers a time when thousands and thousands of Piharau would swim up the river against harsh currents. This now metaphoric act of nature is remembered and celebrated as we reflect on the Agricultural, Cultural, and Conservational acts over the past year. Under the Stars is an exhibition celebrating Aotearoa’s national holiday, Matariki. This exhibition is open to all Rotorua-based artists, amateur or professional, to submit their artworks about Matariki.

Ākonga will present vibrant, multi-material, collaged relief sculptures of a Super Star character inspired by Matariki or one of her eight whetū (stars) children, embodying the essence and stories behind these celestial figures. For many ākonga, this will be their first experience exhibiting their artwork, making it a milestone in their creative journey. This exhibition not only showcases their talents but also introduces them to the Rotorua Visual Arts Community, fostering a sense of belonging and pride.

Lots of entainment, family friendly, free sausage sizzle, fry bread and firepit to keep you warm. Bring a chair, come and relax.

Family fun at the Westland Industrial Heritage Park in Hokitika! 10am to 3pm for the whole park plus train rides, then 5pm to 8pm Night Time Train Rides, opening Friday 28th and Saturday 29th June. Visiting trains, Tractor Rides, Sausage Sizzle (with drinks available too!) and possibly Fire Engine Rides! The Big Engine Shed Sound and Light show will be running throughout the day, and Engine Start-Ups depending on volunteer availability. Train rides $2 per person, with 6 rides for $10. Entertainment will include light art displays, a performance by special guest and New Zealand multi-award-winning Māori singer-songwriter Maisey Rika (Ngāti Awa, Te Arawa, Te Whānau a Apanui, Tūhoe), and more. The event will commence from 5pm with a Mākete Pō (night market) offering a diverse range of kai as well as Māori arts and crafts for sale. Traffic will be busy in the city, so please consider carpooling, taking the bus, cycling or walking to the event. There will also be no access to cash withdrawals onsite and limited access for eftpos transactions, so please bring cash.

A one-off early morning public session for viewing Puanga (Rigel) & Matariki (Pleiades) rising. Puanga will begin to rise at 4:43am, and should begin to be visible around 5:15am Matariki will begin to rise at 5:09am, and should begin to be visible around 5:40am, and should be clearly visible by about 6:00am until close to 7:00am when the sunrise will start making it difficult to see. Bring any good binoculars you own as that is the best way to view the whole cluster rising. Observatory members will be available from 5:30am to help identify Puanga & Matariki.

Join us at 5:30 AM on June 28th, 2024, as we gather under the morning sky in celebration of Puanga/Matariki. This is a free family event and will run all day. starting at 5:30 am for a dawn service. We will continue the day inside with fun free art activities wrapping up at 4pm. The Wairau Māori Art Gallery will be marking the commencement of the Puanga/Matariki by paying homage to our tupuna departed. Our event promises a morning of matuaranga, karakia, kai and fun art activities during the day.
