Each year we select films from the archives that showcase some of the best in New Zealand film making, as well as films that have links to or showcase Māori culture. As communities across Aotearoa New Zealand come together to celebrate Matariki, we are inviting Upper Hutt to share kai (food), company, warmth, and manaakitanga (kindness) with one another. Our Shared Kai Space welcomes you with delicious hot soup, a sausage sizzle, and a warm space to spend time and reflect, and to share stories and knowledge on growing good food and supporting communities. This space is a collaboration between Ōrongomai Marae, the Salvation Army, and the Upper Hutt City Council's Community Development Team and the Libraries Team.

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of June, ARONUI Indigenous Arts Festival with First Lights presents ‘Matariki’, a drone light, sound and story event this midwinter at the Rotorua Lakefront, Aotearoa. Created by Māori artists Cian Elyse White (Ngāti Pikiao) and Mataia Keepa (Ngāti Whakaue), Matariki tells the stories of environmental markers connected to this star cluster, as well as the large Waka or Canoe (Te Waka o Rangi) and it’s captain Taramainuku. Walk through the kauri forest and hear stories about Tane Mahuta and Matariki from our mangai (speaker). We will have heaps of activities including campfires, sausage sizzle, star-gazing, glow worm walk and hot food and drinks. Puaka Matariki Iwikatea is a variety show event divided into two parts - a day show (Karaka te ao – ‘the day calls’) and an evening show (Karaka te pō – ‘the night calls’), this event will be held at Te Pou Ō Mata-Au, Clutha Community Hub, on the 27 June 2024. As this is a variety show, we welcome all performers (this could be, but not limited to; kapa haka, rock n roll, country, dance, theatre etc.,). The main theme for this event is togetherness, bringing together our South Otago communities. As well as the performances there will be the opportunity for market stalls, & food vendors.
