Create a waka lantern with a personal message and enjoy captivating storytelling, special performances, and fun kids' activities Plus, enjoy delicious treats from kai trucks, live music, and more—all free!

We encompass all films that have been acted, directed, produced and filmed by Māori. Each year we select films from the archives that showcase some of the best in New Zealand film making, as well as films that have links to or showcase Māori culture. Puanga Matariki is a special time for all New Zealanders to reflect on our nation’s past, to celebrate our creativity and move forward together into the future. Please note the ratings of each film. People attending R Rated films MUST be over the age noted in the rating certification.

As communities across Aotearoa New Zealand come together to celebrate Matariki, we are inviting Upper Hutt to share kai (food), company, warmth, and manaakitanga (kindness) with one another. Our Shared Kai Space welcomes you with delicious hot soup, a sausage sizzle, and a warm space to spend time and reflect, and to share stories and knowledge on growing good food and supporting communities. This space is a collaboration between Ōrongomai Marae, the Salvation Army, and the Upper Hutt City Council's Community Development Team and the Libraries Team.

An opportunity for the community to join Muaūpoko in dawn karakia, to acknowledge the rising of the Kāhui Whetu, that marks the first month of the Māori New Year. Please arrive early to minimise light pollution, and dress warmly.

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of June, ARONUI Indigenous Arts Festival with First Lights presents ‘Matariki’, a drone light, sound and story event this midwinter at the Rotorua Lakefront, Aotearoa. Created by Māori artists Cian Elyse White (Ngāti Pikiao) and Mataia Keepa (Ngāti Whakaue), Matariki tells the stories of environmental markers connected to this star cluster, as well as the large Waka or Canoe (Te Waka o Rangi) and it’s captain Taramainuku. Ché-Fu is one of our most successful and beloved recording artists, with more top 10 songs than any individual in the country’s music history. He is considered a pioneer of hip hop and Pasifika music in Aotearoa. Don’t miss the chance to hear Ché-Fu & The Kratez perform Kiwi classics ‘Fade Away’, ‘Misty Frequencies’, ‘Hold Tight’ and many others, reimagined with full symphonic styling and the power of a 70-piece orchestra.

Honour our culture and history, with a big, bold, immersive Wellington Waterfront walk-through journey including fire, projections, performances, and a special ceremony to honour those who have passed away and to express our hopes for the future. Share kai with friends and whānau each evening at the Odlins Plaza Kai Court, while listening to performers on the Aroha Stage.

Walk through the kauri forest and hear stories about Tane Mahuta and Matariki from our mangai (speaker). We will have heaps of activities including campfires, sausage sizzle, star-gazing, glow worm walk and hot food and drinks. This experience is across two sites and a Unimog transfer is provided between the areas! Sausages and marshmallows also provided. This event is hosted for the community by the Department of Conservation, Tiakina Kauri, Ministry for Primary Industries, Heritage NZ and Te Rūnanga Ā Iwi Ō Ngāpuhi.

Puaka Matariki Iwikatea is a variety show event divided into two parts - a day show (Karaka te ao – ‘the day calls’) and an evening show (Karaka te pō – ‘the night calls’), this event will be held at Te Pou Ō Mata-Au, Clutha Community Hub, on the 27 June 2024. As this is a variety show, we welcome all performers (this could be, but not limited to; kapa haka, rock n roll, country, dance, theatre etc.,). The main theme for this event is togetherness, bringing together our South Otago communities. As well as the performances there will be the opportunity for market stalls, & food vendors.

Ngā Tohu Toi is an annual awards event celebrating Tauranga Moana Māori creatives and artists shaping our regional identity, reaching beyond our borders, and in some cases, making a local, national and/or international impact. Join us for an exceptional evening featuring refreshments and local entertainment.

Tākaka Library is celebrating the rising of Matariki on Thursday June 27 between 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm with an opportunity to enjoy some pumpkin soup, and learn about planting by the maramataka – the Māori lunar calendar.

Marlborough Youth Trust, Omaka Observatory, Ngati Toa Rangatira Ki Wairau, Marlborough District Council, Te Whatu Ora, Marlborough Pacific Trust, invites the Marlborough community to Matariki and breakfast on the beach. Come along with your family and friends, learn about the Maori New Year, pay respect to those who have passed, see Matariki, and have breakfast together. TSB Festival of Lights: Winter Pop-Up is running from Thursday 27 June – Sunday 30 June for four evenings of light installations and a range of entertainment over the Matariki long weekend. Located in New Plymouth's CBD, illuminating light installations and whānau friendly entertainment will be spread across spaces near Huatoki Plaza, Puke Ariki Landing, Ariki Street and the Coastal Walkway.

We invite the village to join us to celebrate Matariki with an evening of food, music, stalls, fireworks and community. Come ready for dinner & sample some of the delicious food items available - fresh woodfire pizza, sausage sizzle, hot desserts, candy floss & more! Enjoy the musical stylings of Paekākāriki's best musicians and our incredible kapa haka group. Browse the stalls, get your face painted, look at the stars through our telescope, check out the students Matariki projects & enjoy the lights! And finish the night with a fireworks display!

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa present Matariki Whakapiri festival at Te Mānuka Tūtahi marae to celebrate the Matariki Public Holiday in Aotearoa. The festival includes kapahaka performances, a variety of stalls, and finishing off the day with an evening of local entertainment and a night market. A festival enjoyed by Ngāti Awa and the community. Everyone welcome.

A special event road closure will be in place from Queen Street to Pitt Street – opening up the street for Tāmaki Makaurau’s biggest, free Matariki block party! The Karangahape Road Business and orthers are working with a crew of local creatives to curate a fulsome and fabulous evening of live puoro (music), ngā toi Māori (Māori arts and crafts), whakaaturanga tiriti (street performance), kakahu (fashion), kai (food and drink), mākete (markets), kuīni whakarākei (drag queens) and self-guided hikoi (walks).
