Eat New Zealand and Ngāi Tahu whānau are proud to present Feast Matariki 2024. This winter from the 19th - 27th June 2024, we're celebrating Kai Hau Kai as our inspiration for Feast Matariki. For Ngāi Tahu, it was originally a way and place that people came together around food, celebrated abundance, feasted and traded excess. One of the features of these gatherings was a hakari or a stage upon which food was placed to emphasise abundance.

Light from the stars is a key part of Matariki storytelling, so we’re lighting up The Rooftop to celebrate. Matariki New Year festivals coincide with the autumn harvest. If the Matariki stars are dim, it's said the next harvest will be poor. If the stars are very bright, the future will be bright too. Discover the installation on Level 4, The Rooftop.

Gather your crew and join us for this late-night adults-only event to celebrate Matariki. Learn about Matariki and te taiao through immersive activities, kōrero, workshops, and music. Celebrate Matariki heri kai and take part in rongoā and kai Māori practices. Step into the boundless realm of KARE 🌺 KARE emerges as a multi-layered karanga, beckoning all to explore its limitless depths At its heart lies our foundational Matariki exhibition, a tribute to te tau hou Māori and all its richness. Over 40 visionary creatives from every corner of Aotearoa responded to the karanga, infusing their works with the essence of tradition and innovation.

On the eve of the Māori New Year, award-winning Māori artist MOHI releases his Matariki inspired single, “Hoki Mai Rā,” a song for the people. After a three month long national tour, MOHI packed his gears and headed home to the far north to catch up with his whānau. While clearing the land on his whānau papakāinga, it was here that he wrote “Hoki Mai Rā”, a waiata written about the feeling of returning home, being surrounded by your people and your whenua, moana. The anthem of the Māori New Year!

Napier, let's celebrate Matariki together! Join us on Friday 21 June from 5:30pm on Tennyson and Hastings Streets for Kapa Haka, storytelling, art, activities, family fun and food trucks. We will enjoy a special night of Aroha, Manaaki, Whānau and Kai. Remembering those who have gone before us, and making wishes for the year ahead.

The free, cultural festival produced by Christchurch City Council, brings together an array of artistic, lighting and cultural displays, including performances and storytelling. Come into the city with friends and whānau to discover the trail of illuminated artworks, projections, music soundscapes and interactive installations. Tīrama Mai will feature a combo of all-new works and crowd-pleasers from the last couple of years. On opening night enjoy kapa haka performances at The Art Centre in the North Quad.

Join us for the evening and craft a beautiful centrepiece for your table to celebrate Matariki. Share hot soup and kōrero with us as we share tales of the night sky. Suitable for ages 18+. Registration Required. Please register through the libraries website. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver. We may take photos or video recording during events and programmes which may be used in Council promotional material.

Join in with Napier’s Matariki evening, MTG will be open late until 8:30pm. Explore the museum and hunt through the galleries for the hidden stars, we will have a star making activity for the whole family too. Bring the whole family, all welcome! Entry is free.

MATA-FRIKI is a fun twilight event for the whānau to have a kanikani (dance) on a large-scale dancefloor. In recognition of the promise of new beginnings that comes with Matariki and Te Tau Hou Māori, everyone is invited to experience an elevated Whakamana (Movement for Joy) class with Māori contemporary dance artist Tiaki Kerei (Jack Gray). At the end of the session, we will come back down to earth with the opportunity for connection over shared kai.

Celebrate Matariki 2024 with a one-day community Whānau Day at The Historic Village. Whānau Day includes art exhibitions, Māori performers, mākete (market stalls), creative workshops, The Purple Lab Waiata Workshops, kanikani demos & workshop, kai stalls, maumahara tributes and a haka flash mob.

With a new venue and teaming up with Matariki ki Waikato Market Day, gather your whaanau together and join us at Hamilton Gardens, Gate 1 to celebrate all things Matariki. Entry to the event, all arts and crafts activities and games are FREE. Matariki in the City is an opportunity to see, hear and experience traditional and contemporary maatauranga Maaori through live live entertainment, mahi toi e Maaori arts and crafts; taakaro Maaori – contemporary and traditional games, face painting and a hauora hub.

Shop for creations by over 50 Māori artists and makers at Matariki Pātaka Nui – a special market day at Te Papa. This unique shopping experience will showcase mahi toi, raranga, whakairo, design, jewellery, and textiles. Join us for an enchanting evening of stargazing as we gather to connect with the cosmos during the auspicious time of Matariki, the Māori New Year. Immerse yourself in the wonders of the night sky with: Telescope Viewing allowing you to marvel at distant galaxies, nebulae, and stars. Cosy Indoor Presentation on the significance of Matariki gaining insight into its traditions and symbolism. Bring your curiosity, your sense of wonder, and a warm jacket and red-light torches as we come together to celebrate the magic of the cosmos and the spirit of Matariki.

Matariki Heri Kai - come together and share a meal for Matariki! Celebrate the diverse cultures that call our city Ōtautahi home, share in a tasty feast of food and spend some time with each other during this special time of year. Tickets are $25 for a set lunch menu (starter, mains, dessert and a drink) featuring dishes from Afghanistan, Eritrea and Nepal. Halal meat or vegan and gluten-free options available.

Waikawa Bay School will be hosting a 'Matariki Free Fair' to give back to our community. This is an opportunity to celebrate the key values of Matariki such as aroha - love and respect for one another, kotahitanga - unity, manaakitanga - caring and tohatoha - sharing. The entire event will be free and will include fun for the whole family. This free fair will have free clothes, shoes, toys, books, produce and a range of services. More information to come.

Mānawatia a Matariki Te tau hou Māori Discover the stars of Matariki. Experience the magic of colour theory through our view finder - reminiscent of a telescope. Look through the viewfinder to discover hidden clues relating to each of the stars of Matariki. Bring your friends and whānau along for a full day of free fun and entertainment as we celebrate Matariki. We're open 9:00am - 9:00pm 28 June with performances from Te Roopu Kapa Haka o Waimahia Intermediate and Mahi Pai plus face painting, treat carts, activity stations and our viewfinder experience.

A simple Matariki Remembrance service for our community to remember and honour those we love who have died. Followed by afternoon tea together and a time to share stories about them with others. Welcoming and inclusive.

Provide a space for our Community to come together to honour and celebrate their loved ones that have passed since the last rising of Matariki. Within the Matariki cluster is the start Pohutukawa which is connected to our loved ones we have lost.
